Notes historical bibliographic

Ivan Stepanovich Mazeppa (or Mazepa) (in Ukrainian Іван Степанович Мазепа; Masepinzi, 20 March 1639 – Tighina, 22 September 1709) was a Ukrainian ataman of the Cossack State (1687—1709) and a duke of the Holy Roman Empire (1707—1709) who during the Great Northern War sided with the Swedes of Charles XII against the Russian Kingdom. His exploits inspired poets and musicians. He also went down in history for his attempt to create a Ukrainian state independent from Russia.
