Additional Information

Artist: Luigi Bisi (1814-1886)

Born in Milan in 1810, Luigi Bisi began his passion for painting very young, because he was favored by his family environment: he was in fact part of a dynasty of artists, which had its origins in Genoa and then moved to Milan: his father Michele, his uncles Giuseppe and Ernesta and his daughters were all painters. Luigi attended the Brera Academy in 1825 and while still very young he continued with the teaching of Gaetano Durelli. In 1931 he began his journey at the annual Braidense exhibition, and for over fifty years he was a constant exhibitor. He became passionate about perspective painting that Giovanni Migliara had already started and successfully entered the aristocracy and the bourgeoisie, as he specialized in architectural views and interiors of monumental buildings and churches, with high quality perfection and precision. . In 1838 Emperor Ferdinand I of Austria commissioned him to paint the interior of the Milan Cathedral, for his coronation as King Lombard of the Veneto. He became a member of the Ornament Commission between 1837 and 1858. In 1851 he obtained the Chair of Perspective at the Brera Academy, a position he held until his death. Bisi painted noble and broad views, especially as a young man, however he always preferred the interiors of churches and especially of the cathedral of Milan, which is said to have been painted at least eighty-seven times. Many of his masterpieces are preserved in the Milan Museum. For Bisi the cathedral represented a town, a village, a complete world, where the artist, every time he contemplated it, discovered something different. He was president of the Brera Academy from 1879 and died in Milan in 1886.
