Description

The volume gives an account of an extraordinary collaborative work between the architects Le Corbusier and Iannis Xenakis and the musician Edgar Varèse. French and American recording studios had been boycotting Varèse's musical experiments since 1954, as they were too avant-garde compared to the musical panorama of the time. In 1958, on the occasion of the Universal Exhibition in Brussels, a pavilion was commissioned from Le Corbusier: the architect's response was “Je ne ferai pas de pavillon; I'll make a poem electronically with the box that contains it." And he made it a condition that the composer involved in this singular creation was Edgar Varèse. The collaboration then extended to the architect Iannis Xenakis who designed a sort of tent with three divergent points, a project which was signed together with Le Corbusier. Inside this structure, Varèse's music recorded on a three-track band was broadcast by 450 loudspeakers, in a sort of path of sounds, coinciding with the projection of images chosen by Le Corbusier: animals, faces, masks, idols, written texts, works of art. The title of the composition was chosen by Le Corbusier. Our volume presents the various parts of this collective work: the construction of the pavilion, with the details of the project; the images chosen by Le Corbusier; Varèse's reflections on electronic music; images of the installation. The justification for the print run is on the Colophon: “De cet ouvrage, des Cahiers Forces Vives, collection directed aux Éditions de Minuit par Jean Petit, il a été tiré à part: 29 exemplaires nominatifs hors commerce marqués HC destinés à queques âmes éparses dans le monde. .. as many as 80 examples numbered from 30 to 110.
