Copy in good condition, in oblong format. Rather worn binding with gilded titles and decorations on the spine with four raised bands and on the front cover; noteworthy on the front cover is the letter P of Plantes with rich gilded decoration; dry-framed covers: abrasions on the covers, edges, corners and spine; the corners are rounded. Tiny stamp on the upper external corner of the back cover. Gilded edges with traces of dust. Minimal writing in pencil on the first white sheet. Browned leaves with scattered foxing, of varying extent and density. 19 of the 20 planned plates are present; 2 plates are missing the protective sheet. Cut on the lower edge of the two sheets between pages 16 and 17. White paper following page 26 torn. Adhesive tape, to repair a tear, on the lower margin of the following sheet on page 36. Oblong album that takes the reader on a tour inside the Menagerie of the historic Jardin de Plantes in Paris, one of the oldest zoos in the world: it opened in 1794. The animals are portrayed in 19 ft plates (the plate depicting the elephant is probably missing) drawn from life by Pauquet and lithographed by Bocquin. Another 140 engraved vignettes accompany the text.
