Four volumes in two volumes. Good condition copies. Half leather bindings with marbled boards, gilded titles and decorations on the spines: abrasions on the boards, edges and curved corners; abrasions on the spine and muzzles: on the spine of the first volume a small portion of leather insert. Bookmarks attached to the volumes in poor condition, the one of the first volume broken. Edges spattered with dust spots; the head edges are particularly darkened. Tiny stamps and collocation notations in pencil on the first flyleaves of both volumes. Collational formula: [1]⁸, 2⁶, 3-9⁸, 10¹⁰ (last leaf missing). [1]-10⁸, 11⁴; [1]⁴, 2-11⁸, 12⁶ (last leaf missing). [1]², 2-11⁸, 12¹⁰. Well preserved cards with scattered foxing, particularly intense on some cards; small hole in the lower margin of 9.2 of the first volume; nicks in the upper corners of cards 6.3 to 6.5 of the fourth volume. Description

Selection promoted by the publisher Bettoni in 1829 of articles taken from the historic magazine Il Caffé, published in Milan from June 1764 to May 1766 on the initiative of the Verri brothers, with the collaboration of Cesare Beccaria and the group of intellectuals who gravitated around the Accademia dei Pugni. In the preface the publisher explains his intent: to give voice to the hopes of a new beginning that resonated in the writings of those Saggi champions of the Enlightenment of philosophy. In the first article selected, the program of the magazine: “What is this Caffé? It is a press sheet that will be published every ten days. What will this press sheet contain? Various things, very disparate things, unpublished things, things done by different authors, things all aimed at public utility”.
