Description

Interesting collection from a historical point of view of a series of Decrees of the National Convention concerning the theme of Emigrés: starting from 1789 it is estimated that around 150,000 people left French territory fleeing the Revolution. Our documents refer to the period of what is considered to be the second wave of emigration, which coincides with the fall of the monarchy and the establishment of the Republic, a wave which culminated in the period of Terror, involving not only the aristocratic class, prevalent between 1789 and 1792, but all social classes. The decrees concern both the decisions regarding the judicial measures against the Emigrés (for example that of 23 October 1792 establishes the perpetual banishment for those who have left French soil and the death penalty for those who attempt to return, the one of 26 November 1792 decrees the immediate expulsion of the returnees on pain of death for those who try to escape deportation; on February 14, 1793 a reward is fixed for those who denounce the Emigrés who escaped the controls) both above all the confiscation and sale of movable and immovable property of the families, and not only of these: in the Decree of 22 October 1792 there is explicit mention of the sale of the furnishings of the Chateau des Tuileries, of all the royal residences and of the houses of religious orders. Some interesting decrees dedicated to the state of prisons and the treatment of prisoners.
