Al termine della prima guerra mondiale, infatti, la Gran Bretagna sostenne la nascita, dalle rovine dell'impero ottomano, di uno stato ibrido, composto di kurdi, sciiti e sunniti e governato dal leader hashemita Feisal, che non aveva alcun rapporto con quel territorio, ma che venne insediato per dare un "contentino" agli hashemiti dopo aver promesso loro la Siria e averla affidata invece al mandato francese. Questa decisione, di cui Churchill fu il regista, fu gravida di conseguenze: nel 1958 il governo di Feisal fu rovesciato da un colpo di stato cui seguirono regimi sanguinari culminati con Saddam Hussein.
